Does anyone know what / who metamask are.

Metamask seems to be some sort of wallet tool, I have never used them however I keep getting, what I strongly suspect are scam e-mails saying my account will be suspended.

For example

From: this can vary
Subject : Your Decentralized accounts will be suspended

We noticed an attempted login to your Metamask from a location you have not used before, we want to verify that this was indeed you.
To assist you with reactivating your wallet, we have provided detailed instructions in the attached file
Your account and your wallet have been temporarily blocked to prevent you from losing your assets.

How can I recover my account?

Download the attached file to re-activate your wallet.
After completing the process, enable Two-Factor Authentication.

The e-mail did have a html attachment, which has been deleted.

It seems from the subject decentalised social media users may be the target here.

Anyone else having this issue?

@zleap Not yet from Metamask. However, I do get emails of this very nature from just about every bank I don't have accounts with, Apple where I don't have any Apple kit, parcel delivery companies, Amazon (also scam phone calls) and, HMRC for unpaid taxes.

If you don't have an account, it's a scam. If you do, obviously don't click any links, login elsewhere on a browser instead. You know the score.

Be safe.

@NormanDunbar

I would encourage people to share details here, so that others here are aware too

@zleap My email client let's me look at message headers. On Thunderbird it's CTRL+U, if I remember correctly. This is useful as it let's you see who sent the email. The "from" address in an email is pure text and can be anything. I once sent an email to a work colleague with "From: Queen Elizabth 2nd", and he fell for it!

Look in the headers for "return path", usually the sender; and the "received from" addresses. The actual sender may not know their email address has been hijacked.

@NormanDunbar

That may be the case as these e-mails seem to come from different senders

@zleap I got five today from Boots the chemist. All identical. I've been selected to receive free perfume.

All from the same sender, but checking the headers shows different senders.

@NormanDunbar

I wish more people knew about and would use OpenGPG it may not be perfect, but at least we can sign e-mails. If more people used it, then I would not get recipients trying to open a .asc file thinking it was an attachment.
