Some really nice work using ESA's Gaia and NASA/ESA Hubble:

Will our Milky Way & Andromeda collide?

@TillSawala: "Intriguingly, we find an almost equal probability for the widely publicized merger scenario, or, conversely, an alternative one where the Milky Way and Andromeda survive unscathed."

The space telescope science instutute did a public lecture on this a while back, maybe last year or year before. In about 7 billion years the two galaxies will have merged.

Reports earth will be destroyed are odd as by that time, the Sun will have expanded in to a red giant and destroyed the earth anyway, IIRC from the OU course I did the sun is about 1/2 way trough it's main squence phase.
