for some reason, this made me think of a scene in Octavia Butler's "Dawn" (I think it was dawn anyway) where the main character drops an orange on the ground and it starts to damage the environment. naturally, if your world was a living ship, you would know not to "pollute" living systems by mixing them in an uncontrolled way. in some ways though, our world really is a living ship that we should think of caring for in that way. some do, but it's not taught as widely because we've gotten to pretend the world is virtually boundless for so long.
