Besides being a proprietary centralized cloud service Discord is a direct upgrade to IRC. If you present IRC as a viable alternative to Discord, your opinion immediately goes to trash where it belongs. The FLOSS community made a bunch of great tools that actually have features you'd expect from an IM in the 21st century, please stop recommending a glorified TCP/IP wrapper.
@mgorny IRC can already be considered fully replaced with the exception of rare niche communities full of greybeards that scoff at any attempt of improving the current toolset they're accustomed to. (And it has been that way for some 15 years or so.) Sadly, this includes a large portion of FLOSS communities, but even that is shrinking, with the more sensible ones moving to stuff like Matrix.
Discord is trash because it is run by manipulators.
IRC is not so primitive with a decent client.
Matrix is good but the clients are iffy.
@Amikke
/me is just going to wait 5 years to hear the same told about the next fancy tool that's also going to fail to replace IRC.
