@coolboymew Traffic flow control.
without "clover leaves," a lot of high-traffic highway exits will get so backed up they'll disrupt traffic on the street.
There used to be this on-ramp, not far from where I used to live, where the highway was pretty close to a train station (as in an intra-city train station) and between the train stopping traffic on the road, and cars backed up getting on the freeway, the street would backed up for miles sometimes.
@Amikke @coolboymew The "loops" give more room for cars to line up on the on-ramp itself, which keeps the traffic moving, and it keeps the street clear because the cars trying to get onto the highway have somewhere to go, instead of just lining up in the left lane clogging street traffic.
It's still not *good* because US infrastructure is about 25 years behind the rest of the developed world, but it's better than the alternative.
