What if it never gets worse in a way that matters?

I know everyone loves talking about the collapse, the final, blessed imposition of reality upon an insane, unhinged, and uncoupled world. The day when if and then are once again conjoined, when nature shakes off her comfort from below and imposes the older, harsher codes of life? The The “day of the rope” is fun and all, but in many ways it’s the day of sanity. Of cause. The day of effect. What if that day doesn’t come, though? By all rights and logical indicators this lich economy should have given way to nature many times over. It hasn’t before, - and what if it won’t?

Sometimes I look at the “prepared” guys I know IRL and I can’t help but wonder if they’ve missed some of the most important aspects of preparation. Are they a good dad? Or are they a disinterested, family work unit that passively provided the motive force to provide yet more mass-produced system-indoctrinated children for the machine? It doesn’t matter if you have 100,000 rounds in your subterranean dwarf fortress if your grandsons don’t care about it.

All the freeze-dried food in the world won’t save your line when it’s left on the curb as the ungrateful scavengers bearing your name parse your horde for things of interest to the gay urbanite. Hell, you could have 250,000 rounds of belted 8mm and 16 brand-new MG34s in your vault for the end of the world - what good will it do your progeny when it’s handed in to the feds for a cocky do-gooder tweet and a prepaid visa card by your great grandchildren?

@WashedOutGundamPilot i agree but to play devils advocate, at some point theyre "preparing" for an actual collapse where Yes, a gun and things to trade could make them the most capable father- literally talking about when thinks shift enough to where a person with goods is seen as the jeff bezos MEGA because there is nobody else to barter with

idk- if a father can collect that much shit id hope he can not let that be the cause of his shortcomings. I dont meet many of these people for what its worth

@Nordy2 WHAT. IF. IT. DOESN’T. COME. The collapse is a fantasy until it’s not. Your children aren’t. If your kid is in the next room over, THAT is real. THAT is lasting, and squaring him away for the end of the world take a fuck-ton more effort than busting out the credit card at the gun shop. Go spend a thousand dollars to check the gun box on your preparedness form. Done, it’s that easy. Call it good for life.

Now you can move to the shit that matters. If the choice is you being a good dad or a prepared dad I’ll take 3 of the former for every 10 of the latter. We have enough fuckin’ guns for good men, what we DON’T have are good men to run them.

Making good men isn’t easy, or guaranteed, especially in this world. It takes patience, and dedication, and awkward interactions, and at the end of the day you can’t show it off to your friends to seem like you’re a Tier 1 Special Magma Operations Descent Operator for the Hawaiian SEAL Team 9 O’makalu’ehwei’a Unit.
