@Mek101 @itzzenxx it's still pretty damn massive and requires a crappy language

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx Have you considered using a retired Dual Xeon E5 Rack Server for this type of work? It would chug through the workload just like a server should. It's going to be cheaper than having to get a regular computer to do the same. Redundant PSUs and Redundant jet turbine fans. These would be called virtualization servers but they can be used for offloading compile work for nearly anything.

@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx honestly I'm planning to do that with an AMD Opteron build... I just need to save up

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx Opteron 6270 or something like that was about the best performance per dollar. I was going for a dual socket because I couldn't afford or power the quad socket servers.

Make sure to do research on that particular server. Some servers have terrible firmware and other oddities. The Xeons are more powerful.

@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx I'm going for a 6380, the best in the line iirc. it's pretty cheap nowadays...

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx I despise Intel and AMD but that's what hardware is commonly available. At least with AMD you won't have microcode patches that just destroy performance. Also not as many vulnerabilities.

@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx does AMD not have patches? like microcode is used to patch things like Spectre and Meltdown right? does AMD have that kind of stuff?

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx I think it's mitigated by the OS but it could be microcode. AMD didn't have IME or hyper threading. It was just more resistant to many of the attacks if not unaffected.

@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx it was the 16 core one with the G34 socket I don't remember the number exactly
@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx I've got my eye on a dual socket motherboard... all of the listings on ebay come from China for some reason, are they knockoffs or something?

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx Is it a rack mounted server? The boards are real but remanufactured. It's better to get a rack mount server complete even if it's a less powerful Opteron. They can keep it all cool enough with the redundant fans and psus.

@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx I'd like to put it in a custom case and stuff, it's a lot cheaper that way

is it bad that they're remanufactured? are there any performance or reliability problems
@AmpBenzScientist @Mek101 @itzzenxx it's the Asus KGPE-D16 that I've got my eyes on. it looks like it has everything I need. but no used listings just remanufactured I guess...

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx I expected a server brand. The server experience is going to be painful in everything but performance and reliability. The smaller boards are good enough it seems.

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx Rack servers are designed to run 24/7 365 with only minimal downtime for repair. That includes all the components.

@straw @Mek101 @itzzenxx It was a response to a lawsuit AMD got because of their weird cores.
