speaking of ultrasound: some years ago, there was a news story about what ultrasound can be used for.

portable ultrasound machines exist and they can be used for a lot more than looking at foetuses.

they can be used in place of MRI/CAT scans if those aren't available. you can detect many problems, and they're much cheaper to make and easier to maintain than those big machines.

although typically rendered as a 2D black-and-white image, the information is actually 3D data. it's an incredible technology that should probably be in more clinics.
