@White_Bite

I feel like UCSF has been one step short of declaring COVID a vitamin for a while now.

@kthornton @sean @tzimmer_history

Love the optimism, but a significant chunk of the country doesn't know the ACA exists 12 years later.

@Empathy1st

This reminded me of something I'd read before and a quick search shows that they were supposedly working on something that was called "SA55+SA58" earlier. Way out of my wheelhouse, but I'm wondering if it's just nomenclature or if they moved on from the SA55 component. I'm not sure monoclonal antibodies are the way out of this, but I'll jump on just about any hope bandwagon.

I don't disagree, I just don't think it's enough. That's all.

@TonyStark

Something that's not been reported enough(which I admit pretty much goes for most of what DeSantis has done in Florida) is that it's pretty well known in educator circles that he only started messing with the universities more deeply after it was pointed out that some of the curriculum changes he was making to K-12 education would make it hard for future Florida kids to be accepted to any accredited colleges. So now he's working on a whole ecosystem in which kids get the education he wants them to from K straight through college.

@chipmcdonald

Absolutely couldn't agree more. There's ignorance and willful ignorance, as well, going on here.

@AdamKorengold@mastodon.social @sean @tzimmer_history

No argument on journalists and how they work in the real world at all. I just don't think it's realistic to expect some grassroots folks talking to the people they know to counter conservative media. That's a lot like saying "I'm going to open up this store and with zero advertising I expect it to beat Walmart" IMHO. There has to be infrastructure built around this to rival the infrastructure pushing disinformation.

@AdamKorengold@mastodon.social @sean @tzimmer_history

Since you can't have this back and forth on a micro level because there's very few journalists/news media talking heads that will push it that far, and Republicans are opting out of debates, how do you effectively have this debate on a macro level? Doesn't it require a media that's willing to go along, a la Fox on the right?

@kthornton @sean @tzimmer_history

I love the idea that changing things for the better is how you win, but, I think these past two years should put that idea to bed. If most people don't know that you passed bills to make things better it shows that you must *not only* do those things, but effectively "advertise" it by getting out and mounting a defense of those positions as well.

@Beeks

I saw elsewhere on your profile, and responded, about apps and browser. I just don't know enough about Tusky to help, but, I promise it's all out there and ongoing you just have to connect to it!

@Beeks To follow up on myself there, I don't do a lot of pop culture or celebrity news, but I like the Avengers. I used to watch more football, but after 40 years of watching every game the Broncos have managed to ruin it for me over the last couple of years.

Anyway, I found out about both of those events, in real time, here on Mastodon, so if you follow enough people you'll get the news and info you want on demand. Good luck out there!

@Beeks I've never used Tusky, and I usually use the browser version(which still takes some tweaks in the settings to be super-functional for me), but the app MetaText does a pretty good job when I'm on my tablet. Might want to try it out if you're able.

@Beeks It's because you're only following 23 people. There's no algorithm shoving content in your face. You have to cultivate your timeline by following people who share the same interests as you do.

Start with your Damar Hamlin hashtag there. Click/tap on it. There's 127 people talking about it right now according to my screen. Go through those and start following people who share the same interests as you.

Do the same for all of your interests and soon your timeline will be overflowing with the news and info you're interested in and not the info that a billionaire or a huge company somewhere wants you to see first.

@chipmcdonald

Thank you so much for responding! That's really sad. Anecdotally, my wife's a teacher and especially this past semester she's seeing the same in a lot of her students with memory problems.

The way we're handing this all is so poor, but, to expand on that, many very good students are seeing their test scores drop because they're not remembering things. Then the parents call my wife and complain that their kids have gotten "so lazy" when the same kids are telling my wife that they're really struggling with recall and energy levels. Of course, the parents have usually never even heard of long COVID or post-COVID effects.

@steven @mlmartens

I hear you! Here, what happened was they gave x to each school per student when they were actually, physically, in the school, but 1/3rd of that for each student who was at home logged in virtually. It gave them the incentive to remove hybrid learning to get more funding.

@steven @mlmartens

I must be confused, then. I took the time to read before posting that and the link I relied on clearly stated that Canadian schools are funded based on enrollment. Sorry if I was misinformed!

peopleforeducation.ca/public-e

We also have no hybrid learning in our area. We went to a full time online school and haven't regretted it at all.

That all said, it's certainly a tragedy what's happening in schools and we're glad we have been able to not be a part of it.

@steven @mlmartens

I don't personally know much about BC schools, but, from what I know of my local school district their number one priority, over all others, is butts in seats to keep the maximum amount of money flowing.

There's also plenty of parents who don't want to, or sometimes can not, deal with their kids at home all of the time who will be vocal about it to give the school cover for the decision. I know people in both camps, sadly, and the school district will point to them and say "There's nothing else we could have done."

@SmallTownGirl @micropainter

My wife tells me about students of hers who were formerly great students who now just can't find the words to make it through tests. I definitely worry about this a lot.

@SmallTownGirl @micropainter

Oh absolutely. I should have been more clear and that's my fault. The online school has been better than pre-pandemic brick and mortar.

@SmallTownGirl @micropainter

I completely agree. My kids are currently in an online school that's been open for over 20 years. As a fairly well educated human being married to a teacher I can tell you that the curriculum's better and the results for my kids are better than what we were getting from our local brick and mortar school which is quite well rated.
