Struggling with timeouts, server offline, or error hosts? 🙅♂️ It’s not just you.
The massive influx of people from #twittermigration is putting a strain on bigger instances (the server you signed up to).
They are mostly run by volunteers, frantically working in the background to patch holes and upgrade the infrastructure to meet demand. It’s not the whole of #mastodon that’s down.
My best advice? Make yourself a drink, let the cat out, and it’ll be running smoothly again soon 🤗
It seems like Mastodon is really starting to take off. Seems like atleast something positive is coming out of this "rich super villian takes over social network" situation.
@manish I think a lot of people felt safest in joining a server that had a ton of activity, maybe not understanding that all servers are connected, and thinking they would be more likely to find people on bigger servers. So... a bunch of people joined the same one and slowed things down a bit.
Science people! 👩🔬 👨🔬
There are some curated lists of scientists to follow on Mastodon here:

Hey there everyone! 👋
Please have a look at my website because it will probably answer a lot of your questions about how to use Mastodon and the Fediverse:
If you're recommending me as a follow to others, it would be great if you could mention the site too so that new people get help straight away.
I am getting repeating questions that are already answered on the website, so it would help a LOT if you could tell new people about the site as well as my account! 😅
Hello
I'm trying to figure out these hashtags to find my tweeps.
Where are you all at?🔎
#medtwitter
#medmastodon
#MedEd
#tweetiatrician
#ObGyn
#FOAMed
#COVID
@catchthebaby Ooo this is a good idea for finding people! I'm going to have to copy you. 👋 Also hi, I'm an MD/PhD student/probably future neurologist and have spent a lot of time on MedTwitter too. I'm attending a Society for Neuroscience conference next weekend and kinda excited thinking of live-posting much of it both here and on Twitter. It'll be fun having so much more character space to describe the sessions and reflections on here.
@nick Do you want $8 for it? 😊
@BakkeHK There is a med-mastodon server and it looks like so far people are using #MedMastodon in place of #MedTwitter for hashtags.
Hi everyone! I'm a Data Scientist Advocate at Observable. I mostly post about data science, stats, #rstats, and related feelings, usually through illustrations (library at https://allisonhorst.com/). Sometimes dogs and mountains. I am really excited to see so many pals already here, and excited to meet & learn from you all! 💚
@bestfootforward @conor I feel very similarly!
I've been here a few years, so here are a few tips I think might be useful.
- Mastodon is its own thing: some parts might feel like Twitter, some parts won't. It's not intended as a replacement.
- You'll figure it out! Don't worry if it doesn't make much sense right now.
- There's no end-to-end encryption, so don't send sensitive info over Mastodon.
- It's run by volunteers around the world who manage the servers/instances in their own time and often at their own expense.
- Go and enjoy it!
@antimnguyen 😮 Brilliant!
@antimnguyen Thanks! I wonder if it's feasible to just follow every single account on the server I'm interested in, forever. 🤔
@antimnguyen Soooo is there a way to closely follow another server (example: med-mastadon) and see things that are locally posted there that don't have a hashtag in the post? Help, am noob.
Your Mastodon feed won't improve through passive engagement. There is no algorithm to suggest and share what you liked.
You must actively follow different people to see what they boost, and you must boost for other people to see. Some people are from different servers. You will see more of what they see organically. You can also hashtag to increase visibility.
There is no quote retweet either. You have to actively engage and comment in the thread.
Extremely stubborn MD/PhD student investigating pain and memory. I'm in my third year of a seven-year-long Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson pursuing my PhD in #neuroscience.

All posts are personal opinions and do not represent any specific institution I'm affiliated with, but the academic world would probably be way better if they did.
