For all those who wonder why you would cheat to get ahead in academia - considering the low pay, high stress and terrible working conditions - may I remind you that at some point we were (almost) all convinced that becoming a professor would be the best thing ever? And that is without getting into how some get a kick out of the respectability that a tenure position warrants, plus many other reasons to cheat (such as grifting for the sake of it). No mystery here... #ReceptioGate

I've been thinking about what we can learn from #ReceptioGate. In many ways, it reminds me of Dirk Stapel's case who, according to Wikipedia, wrote in response to the interim report that accused him of data fabrication in numerous papers: "I did not withstand the pressure to score, to publish, the pressure to get better in time. I wanted too much, too fast. In a system where there are few checks and balances, where people work alone, I took the wrong turn." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diederik #academia

#ReceptioGate:

Der SNF begünstigt ein System von «Fake it till you make it»." #receptiogate kath.ch/newsd/carla-rossis-fak

I find it interesting how the mission of RECEPTIO has evolved over just the past two years.

In June 2020 the website (receptio.org) looked like this:
web.archive.org/web/2020061102
It promised research "in all fields of Medieval and Renaissance European civilisation," with an emphasis on philology. No specific mention of codicology, fragmentology, or DH.

Today this openness can still be seen on the current website (receptio.eu), e.g. under "other ongoing projects" and "events" (Dante / Caravaggio / Philology of fashion etc.). But the "main project" and most of the activities and offerings are now focused on codicology and especially fragmentology. Rossi is said to have devised her own (copyrighted!) method, some 50 digital editions of dismembered manuscripts are in progress, and "RECEPTIO hires scientific staff that carries out research in the field of Fragmentology." A rather sudden and, as it turns out, ill-advised reorientation of what may have started out as a valuable initiative.

My email password was hacked again and that's the third time I’ve had to rename my cat.

ist schon erstaunlich relevant (Summa technologiae [1964] 1981, s. 66).

For those of you who are as eager to read more about the #Receptiogate affair as I am, here is today’s news instalment, a 5th post by the duped blogger, addressing the issue of plagiarism. As entertaining as this is in all its absurdity, at the heart it is a truly sad and disturbing situation, of course. To be continued, no doubt.

I could do boring catch-up things today or I could see how much German I remember and try to make my way through the latest #ReceptioGate news 🤔 kath.ch/newsd/receptiogate-der

If you haven't been following the story of the RECEPTIO "research centre" and publisher. it can only be described as what in Ireland we call GUBU - grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented.

@Marphurius vielen Dank.

Very good summary (in German) of #Receptiogate, including some new statements and thoughtful commentary in the context of Swiss academia and funding practices:

@Marphurius #Rossi seems to say that the stock photos on the #Receptio pages are due to a technical problem. That doesn't seem credible to me. Among other things, #Kidd posted a link showing pages that have recently been deleted from reception.eu: web.archive.org/web/diff/20221 There I find an image of myself, clearly a photomontage that I never knew anything about.

I'm delighted to report that MIT and the W3C have reached an agreement and that the W3C will kick off 2023 with funds and assets.

Many thanks for all your support and to all those who worked towards reaching an agreement. Enjoy the holidays!

“Beyond Word Processing: The Online Text System” (1979-10-03)

Very interesting memo by David Casseres on what what could perhaps be called “NLS-style text editing” in the context of Jef Raskin’s original Macintosh project (i.e., before Steve Jobs took over).
