“for women in biology, the likelihood of leaving science after ten years was 58%; for men, it was nearly 49%.”
Nearly 50% of researchers quit science within a decade, huge study reveals
An important difference here is that biologists are simply leaving thd academic employment path, a significant percentage will still be working in their trained profession. The idea that studying and doing a PhD in a field means these people were intending to stay in academia in that field is... A peculiarity of biology. For example in chemistry, engineering and physics a doctorate has long been the starting point into an industrial career (5 decades at least). This is normal and good.
The statistics for teachers, nurses, etc. are much more concerning. These people are leaving a vocation they explicitly trained for. This is a tragedy.
