For years, I’ve been Bothered by things like dating apps and social media as superimposing consumer culture into intimacy and the Self.

I’ve talked with people about capitalism working its way up the hierarchy of needs, having long since colonized food and shelter and safety, now setting its sights on belonging, connection, and self-actualization.

For the most part, people have made me feel like I’m being unnecessarily alarmist and out of touch for having this view. I’ve questioned my sanity and relevance as a result.

To hear Klein call this out directly, and speak about it as a profoundly painful experience, has been a vindicating relief. She’s right: it’s the last frontier of privatization, and it should horrify us all.
