Full disclosure: Technically, I was able to access the internet via a BBS I was a member of slightly before this. I could send a GOPHER request via the BBS messaging system, which would relay the command to the internet and return the response as a message. It could take a day for a return message to make it to the BBS. It must have taken me three weeks to find a file and finally download it. It was some HTML file and I didn't have a browser.
