The founding proponents of modern American conservatism started to advance their views as early as 1951, when William Buckley wrote God and Man at Yale. If you are not familiar with this book, you can get an idea of it from this highly critical contemporaneous review. theatlantic.com/magazine/archi 5/

Modern American conservatives believe in inherent authority of the church, the patriarchal Christian family, and an unfettered market. The view also rests on a belief about the incompetence of government. Government is too removed, too big, too clumsy for tasks other than minimal order-keeping. When government does properly maintain order and stability, individuals and nongovernmental organizations can attend to all the other tasks government might attempt but is likely to botch. 4/

Modern American conservatism approves only a very small range for government action. Government may act to maintain order, stability, and certain kinds of hierarchy, and only it if does not encroach upon the prerogatives of appropriate churches (white evangelical Christian ones and those with comparable tenets and practices), acceptable families (heterosexual, two-parent, patriarchal), and the free market (capitalist). 3/

Politics is like climate change; most people will agree that things need to change, but not at the expense of reliable, predictable personal privilege. Anything but inconvenience.

You know what would fix this? Single-payer #healthcare, an option which #Biden and the #Democrats have rejected on behalf of their corporate donors and their special interest lobbyist chums.

“So now, [United Healthcare] is just blatantly breaking the law by denying a hip replacement as a ‘pre-existing condition.’

He was never seen for his hip prior to seeing me and never diagnosed with arthritis so they just lied.

Appeal filed and also denied.

This has to stop”

Checked some of my plants early this evening, and I was pleased to see four or five Morning Glories are now climbing. But the flowering vine that’s really surprising is this Tangerine-A-Peel. It’s trying to strangle a neighboring Abutilon as it wraps itself around every balcony post in reach. But the #flowers are beautiful!

Just got back from a business trip where 25 people were inside a big conference room for two days. One person was coughing, and I was the only person who masked. But maybe not fast enough (I foolishly thought that someone with obvious symptoms would stay home). Now I quarantine from my family to see if I pay the price for my own stupidity.
