Small but important antedating of "spy ray" for the Historical #Dictionary of #ScienceFiction:

This is very common in the '30s and '40s, & is used constantly by E. E. "Doc" Smith, & rare after the 1950s.

Turns out Jack Williamson got there first, with a 1932 use.

Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders were a regiment of U.S. cavalry volunteers recruited in 1898 from New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Texas. Many New Mexicans joined to fight in the Spanish-American War to demonstrate their loyalty to the U.S. (New Mexico became a territory in 1847, but didn't become a state until 1912.)
