Machine Learning Algorithms Can Find Anomalous Needles in Cosmic Haystacks

When you consider just how many galaxies there are in the Universe, it's too much for humans to search through. Modern machine learning algorithms have taken over, churning to petabytes of astronomical data searching for needles in the haystack. Beyond just identifying various galaxies, a new algorithm has been trained to look for anomalies, such as galaxy mergers, strong gravitational lenses, and more. After scanning 4 million galaxy images from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, the AI highlighted 1,635 anomalies, including 18 previously unidentified sources with "highly unusual morphology."
