The last fruit harvest of the year: medlars.
Medlars are related to apples, but smaller.

They become edible after they've been touched by a frost or two. But when they get several frosts, they become mushy and (I find) unplesant to eat. I picked these at just the right time.

It's wonderful to be able to pick fresh fruit from my own garden in the winter, but I need to eat them pretty fast because they stay fresh for only a few days.

On June 4, 1942, Japanese pilot Tadayoshi Koga crashed his Zero fighter plane on Akutan, caused by damage received during attack on Dutch Harbor. That July, US recovered the plane & used it for intelligence/training. Known as the Akutan Zero, some believe it gave US a crucial advantage during WWII. The plane was destroyed in a 1945 runway accident. Americans buried Koga on Akutan. He was exhumed and reburied on Adak, then later exhumed again and returned to Japan. #alaskahistory #alaska #akutan
