With the Twitter reinstatement of the former US President who attempted to incite a fascist coup after losing an election, now would _really_ be a good time to stop cross-posting your Twitter RTs here.

If you feel that cross-posting is the only way to maintain a presence here, please consider limiting it to original posts without mentions or RTs, to avoid cluttering timelines with Twitter URLs. Thank you kindly for your consideration.

Don't be naive folks. That poll had nothing to do with it.

@freemo

This sounds like something I talk about a lot, actually. Scientists, generally speaking, will have a method on how to do things. We're used to SOPs and process is often our thing.

The majority of the world doesn't think like that. If your instant and immediate reaction isn't what they want, then you're automatically against them.

I'm not going to write a novel, but look at how the non-scientists in the world handle information on things like COVID or climate change. If it changes, it's inherently bad in their opinion. Only the first opinion they heard matters, to a large number of people, and they'll go to the grave believing it.

TLDR; scientists and non-scientists often struggle with communication. Thank you for coming to my TED talk :)

So yesterday I spoke of the need to #FundTheFediverse - to build critical infrastructure for the #Fediverse & the need to do so before the next item in the #MuskPocolypse occurs. (Which, at this rate, seems daily)

These are my ideas: in 🧵 form.

1. The first obvious thing is to donate to your local instance admin, find their Patreon, usually on their about page, and give even $1 dollar.

Make it happen. Give $8 bucks if you want the added benefit of mocking Elon.

Next one in the reply.

Clif boosted

OK this is (or should be) obvious too.

3. Fund @Gargron's non-profit. This builds:

☑️ The Official Mastodon app for iOS & Android
☑️ The flagship site mastodon.social & mastodon.online, as well as:
☑️ joinmastodon.org, the onboarding page of the project and related APIs
☑️ docs.joinmastodon.org, the documentation for the project - helping developers everywhere.

This is key infrastructure that needs more 💰 stat. These need to handle tons more traffic & upgrades now.

I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

Ok next:

5. If you are on a larger Instance, consider moving to a medium-small one that is run by a responsible admin who has signed the Mastondon Server Convenant.

This does two things:

☑️ Empties a seat on those big, more known instances for newbies
☑️ Distributes the load of current users out

As @hollie put it so well:

"Mastodon is a bunch of islands that can talk to each other. The smaller and more spread out we are, the easier things are to moderate. Horizontal scaling FTW! "

2005: Rupert Murdoch paid $580m for Myspace.
2009: he sold it in $35m.

2008: Bebo was sold for $850m, to AOL. The founders later bought it back for $1m. It was regarded as one of the worst deals ever made in the dot-com era.

2013: Yahoo paid $1.1bn for Tumblr. 2019: they sold it in $3m.

Elon Musk paid $44bn for Twitter. If history has taught us anything it's that this isn't going to end well… when there wasn't a viable business model in the first place.

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.

If you're hearing a lot about the fediverse these days, you should know: Mastodon is not the whole fediverse and the fediverse is not simply a Twitter replacement. The fediverse is an entire ecosystem, built on something called ActivityPub. Learn more: eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/leav

I find it odd that many people on #Twitter who are anti-capitalists, are hesitant to try Mastodon, which is decentralized, not commodified (in sense of no one can buy or sell it). It is a #Fediverse. It is truly space for the people. I find it much less stressful than #twitter which is more combative.
