There is a war on journalism - Julian #Assange is at the centre of that war. If this precedent is set then what happens to Assange can happen to any journalist.

If you hack the government or push for someone to hack the government, don't be surprised if they try to arrest you.
@Demosthenes Nobody "hacks the government". That's the fantasy fiction of the US DoJ.
Exposing the secrets, lies and crimes of governments is a duty for every journalist and everyone who believes in liberal democracy and the rule of law.
Protecting sources, however they access information of public interest, is also, part of the job of any journalist who deserves that title.
Should we be surprised governement try to arrest journalists? Maybe nothing surprises you anymore...

"Nobody hacks the government" is an idealized view of the world that doesn't exist. Government is not and cannot be perfectly transparent, otherwise competitors could apply game theory to damage and defeat them. Imagine if other countries knew our military strategy.
@Demosthenes it's precisely when these "game theory"-infused rhetorics generating fear and hate of the other prime over universal principles, usually in the interest of a very few, that there is a paramount need for everyone to know the fuck is going on.
Imagine if if everyone (including other countries!) knew that y/ y"our military strategy" involves paying most of multi-hundred-billion budgets to private contractors doing shit, spying on everyone, commiting crimes, getting rich.. just Imagine

If every country universally and completely made all their governments transparent at the same time, then sure, it's an option. But we need to behave in the bounds of reality. We live in a world where they aren't transparent, and a non-transparent government would be able to outcompete a transparent one. Hence why all governments are opaque to one extent or another.
@Demosthenes one thing for sure to me is making the sort of moral stretches of compromises you seem to be making to justify the unjustifiable is NOT going make anything more "transparent" (or more fair, more just, less brutal and oppressive) at all...

You're assuming transparency and fairness are a goal in government. They aren't. China is doing fine without them.
In the geopolitical theater, the only things that matter are stability, smooth transitions of power, and leverage over your opponents.

To say whether I benefit or not is beside the point. When humans first started farming around Egypt thousands of years ago, it didn't improve people's quality of life. In fact, they ate smaller variety of food, suffered from malnutrition, and had far less leisure time. However, that society allowed for strong social stratification and accumulation of power, outcompeting surrounding tribes with their organization.
Whether a government is for the people or not is merely a function of the power they can accumulate collectively. As an individual, my thoughts don't matter alone.

And sometimes that implies to send a journalists for 175y in super-max prison, without 1st amendment protection and no fair trial, right? for the example and in the name of "reality" :)
