There seems to be a thing happening,
I'm trying to understand it,
here are my current thoughts:

1. "Legacy" media (existing since pre-internet era) mal-adapted for ecosystem where people can choose from infinite news sources, or start their own.

2. Old adage "bad news sells" more true now than ever, but more specifically, *urgent* news sells.

3. Certainly some journalists embellish to get clicks, but this is marginal and not the real problem...

@cjd what you're not mentioning is that the economics of media companies are really terrible. Massive consolidation is happening, and the owners are leveraging the companies not to make money per se, but to influence the behavior of people, particularly to keep them focused on social justice issues instead of issues that impact most people like economics and worker-employer leverage.
