What's the difference between a submachine gun and a pdw? pdws are smaller?

@valleyforge IMO a PDW is usually a SMG that shoots fancy expensive AP PDW ammo. 4.6 and 5.7. It's something that was intended to replace SMG's and carbines, but couldn't because it's too expensive to add the ammo to military supply chains.

@Diptchip I think it's more of a role thing. So smgs are designed for suppression and for firepower at short range whereas pdws are designed to be carried by support personnel for defense. So the original cz scorpion is definitely a pdw even through it's in 32acp. Hell even an m1 carbine fits this description

@Diptchip hey forgotten weapons posted a q&a video this morning making exactly this argument!

@valleyforge See, you already have the answer. The design and features fall out of the role. For example, PDW does not even always need a full-auto capability, while an SMG definitely does. That said, there was a lot of convergence. Everyone would love a small weapon that's as hard-hitting as a big one. They the procuring authorities keep seeking it.

@valleyforge @Diptchip Oh, and: Ian of FW posted a QnA video today, where one of the questions was just this: SMG vs PDW. See it at offset 06:47 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUbIVNYNv1g&t=407s #guns
