Honestly, if this mastodon thing has reminded me anything, it's that the internet is a big place with lots of cool people, making cool stuff.

Maintaining the current fanning out of social media platforms has been totally exhausting. Please enjoy this horseshoe crab.

I saw many posts asking for pictures of pets tonight. is happy to pop into your timeline this evening! Stormy’s not feeling 100% though. Molting is never fun, but the cycle is nearly over. My sweeper has been working overtime!

@freemo @icedquinn - I’m sensing some “Trailer Park Boys” and Swearnet vibes here! Gotta try to take things as light as possible. I always say that if you hate the CEO, become the CEO. (How can anyone claim to be the CEO of a decentralized system? I’d ask him if he’d bother responding.) I’m not much impressed with Mastodon. But sadly all current social media options leave much to be desired. I do like the majority of the people I’ve met here though. I’m not leaving… yet anyway.

I went hiking in the Ozarks on Saturday morning and stumbled on a small patch of frost flowers!

This is the first time I've seen them, and I was surprised to see them this late in the year. Frost flowers typically form during the first few hard freezes of fall when sap in certain small plants freezes, rupturing the stem and forcing water out. The water freezes on contact with the air and builds up into distinctive flower-shaped petals!

#introduction
I am neuroscientist and engineer. Our lab at Johns Hopkins University BME is interested in how the brain computes information about the world and how this representation is shaped by sensory experience from early development up until old age. We focus on the auditory system and use in vitro and in vivo optical and electrophysiological methods, behavioral approaches, etc.

Hi #introduction from me..!
I'm a Prof of Operational Research at UCL & member of Independent SAGE.
As such, I've been tweeting about Covid for 2.5 yrs now so expect more of that here!
Plus occasional forays into politics, women in science, general science & stuff about London.
Hope I get the hang of it soon!

Spotted on that bird platform (shared by Prof Lauren Ball) and resharing for matadonians!

A Brief #introduction

I'm a scientist wearing many hats: #AnalyticalChemistry #Oceanography #Limnology #ClimateScience ... Couldn't tell you which hat is my favorite (the others would get jealous).

#Carbon #biogeochemistry is my jam. #LakeSuperior is my laboratory.

#Introduction

I’m Steph and I’m passionate about precision #neuroscience! 🧠 Namely:
1) 🎯 understanding fundamental #measurement principles, &
2)🧍🏽‍♀️bridging #idiographic and nomothetic approaches for more precise individual-level understanding and prediction.

I have a few identities—engineer, neuroscientist, and entrepreneur—and an inclination towards #statistical & philosophical issues in psychology & psychiatry.

Excited to connect 👋🏽

PS On the job market & open to opportunities 🚀

#introduction toot - I'm an assistant prof. of sociology at the University of Haifa. I study #algorithms / #data / #AI from a qualitative, critical, empirical perspective.
My current projects include algorithmic production in #SiliconValley, data #infrastructures in Israel, Israeli #surveillance firms, #aiethics, #microbiome science, and more.
In a previous life, I also wrote about #ptsd, online #depression, #emotions, and more.
Oh, and this 👇 is Bella.

#Introduction time! 👋 I am an #engineering #professor at Queen's University in Kingston, #Canada. My expertise is in field and mobile #robotics. I have a newish interest in applications of #machinelearning to #control and #navigation problems. Previously worked as an #engineer at #space #robotics firm MDA. Also currently serve as Director at the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute. My #math #teacher wife and I have three #kids and we enjoy #golf.

*Introduction post*

I never really got into Twitter, but apparently I’m not missing much more than a sea of dumpster fires. I’ve heard good things about #Mastodon and I’m curious to see how it sizes up against other platforms.

I am a Scientific Research Analyst (short answer is examining #research #metadata) doing #datascience and #data tasks in #python and #rstats.

Other areas of interest include #news #politics #publichealth #epidemiology #COVID #vaccines #cancer #science

Are data folks even active here? I hope this community doesn't die out.

Is it me or the interest and the fun has died down since the high from earlier weeks?

Spent the weekend creating my own personal #mastodon and #pleroma (a lightweight fediverse server) instances. I started by setting up #yunohost on a #raspberrypi. This made the sysadmin tasks very easy (including app installs with a few clicks). Unfortunately my rpi3 couldn't handle installing mastodon but handled pleroma just fine.

I considered leaving things here, but decided to spin up a debian VPS and see how it worked there. I was able to install mastodon (again using yunohost) on a server with 1 CPU and 2GB RAM. I ran it for about a day then decided to tear it down, reduce the RAM to 1GB, and install Pleroma with Mastofe (so I get the Mastodon look and feel). Seems to be running great and has a super small footprint.

I'll leave this running for now, it's only going to cost $4/month due to the low server specs. The only thing holding me back from moving my profile is how much I enjoy the #hachyderm server!

Fun stuff, if you decide to give this a shot let me know how it goes!

Some hashtags to help orient you:
I work in #VertebratePaleontology, with focus on the #Evolution of #JawedVertebrates and the #FishTetrapodTransition. The timeframe for my research essentially spans the #Silurian, #Devonian and #Carboniferous periods. Much of my work is based on #SynchrotronTomography carried out at the #EuropeanSynchrotronRadiation Facility, #ESRF.
