Cool science!
Really proud to share this latest publication with a dream team.
We describe a new Drosophila stock for cGMP imaging. Plus: A microscopy approach that enables FRET analysis made easy with almost any (spectral) confocal.
Plus: #openaccess at really affordable fees.

"Led by German expert Stefanie Haustein, a group of scientists has now calculated the turnover of the “oligopoly” that controls this new market. Using mainly public funds, the scientific community paid the five large publishers $1.06 billion in four years. And according to this estimate, the sum covers only the fees to publish open access studies."

We're looking for a PhD student to work on Animal behaviour in a changing world: Investigating the effects of multiple stressors. The student would use hermit crabs to understand how multiple stressors such as temperature, acidity, and salinity impact behaviour and knock on consequences for ecosystems. You would be based at Queen's University in Belfast while collaborating with myself at Aberdeen. Any questions please ask, and pass on to those who might be interested. https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/quadrat-dtp-animal-behaviour-in-a-changing-world-investigating-the-effects-of-multiple-stressors/?p165611
I am very pleased to share with the mastodon community the first part of my PhD work:

We are looking for talented junior scientists to join our International Max Planck Research School for Language Sciences in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Two fully-funded 4-year #PhD fellowships (2024-2028) are available to carry out cutting-edge research on #genetics and #development of human #language, with several innovative projects to choose from, co-supervised by leading researchers at the Max Planck Institute and our partners at the Radboud University. Projects include investigating rare #DNA variants in genes that cause developmental speech/language disorders, and neuroimaging #genomic analyses of language circuits in the brain.
Application portal opens Dec 4th 2023 and closes Jan 8th 2024. Full information and FAQ can be found here: https://www.mpi.nl/imprs-phd-fellowships-2024

'We report that Drosophila A virus (DAV) infection disrupts intestinal homeostasis in Drosophila by inducing sustained ISC proliferation, resulting in intestinal dysplasia, loss of gut barrier function, and reduced lifespan.'
The FlyBoard is excited to announce the call for Nominations for the Drosophila Community Service Award. Please submit your nomination by 01/12/2024 by email to: drosophilaserviceaward@gmail.com. Please boost!
A goal of the award is to raise awareness within the Drosophila community about the depth and diversity of efforts supporting its success. Any member of the Drosophila research community is eligible, including professionals not holding traditional tenure-track positions.
Hello science friends! Can anyone point me towards some resources that I could use learn how to do a de novo genome assembly from long reads (@nanopore)? Mammalian species, no reference genome exists. An equally exciting and daunting task.... Please share #neuroscience #genomics
Please say hello to our newly minted BSc Luisa Guyton at her first conference and, hence, first poster! It's on optogenetic self-stimulation of dopamine neurons. Poster PP2 on this morning at #sfn23

PhD in Cell Biology
I am a Research Scientist and lab manager for the Tootle lab in the Biology department at the University of Iowa. We use Drosophila oogenesis to understand the mechanisms regulating prostaglandin production and function. My particular interest is the developmental roles of lipid droplets and their connection to prostaglandins.
I love biology and teaching people about what is happening in cells. I also am really interested in microscopy.
I also like cats, horses and horseback riding, fish keeping (I have two aquariums), video games-particularly the Half-Life franchise and Half Life mods, and I have recently gotten into VR (NOT META!) so if you want to chat about any of these topics that would be great!
