"want" is how we make a reality. More people have to truly want to mitigate climate change. More than they want, for example, to drive cars with combustion engines or electric motors, or to want to fly on jets or eat red meat.

Some people, so many people, believe they're honestly wanting to mitigate climate change (a story they tell themselves). But, many people don't change their own lifestyles so as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., they don't quit eating red meat or flying on jets). Perhaps they're assuming that someone else will mitigate climate change (e.g., the politicians & industries) or that some future technology will mean they can simply, for example, buy an electric car and everything will be fine.

Some people, so many people, are not honestly wanting to mitigate climate change. But they tell other people a different story. In other words, climate virtue signaling is a very common form of social greenwashing. Maybe they think sincere people are stupid. Like we can't see that their words don't align with their behaviors (activities).

Who is going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if most people don't try to reduce their activities that are causing greenhouse gas emissions?

Sincere people that want to mitigate ecological degradation therefore climate change will want to live an ecologically low-impact lifestyle qoto.org/@Empiricism_Reloaded/

"want" is how we make a reality.

It's not ethical to wait until more people want to mitigate climate change. Therefore, we must nurture that want. And mitigate the merchants of doubt that try to make people feel that mitigating climate change is difficult or hard.

It's evidently not hard to develop political policies that promote a more self-sufficient, low ecological impact lifestyle within a more local economic context. qoto.org/@Empiricism_Reloaded/

Great to see a meetup of #P2P projects funded by NGI pop up at P2P Basel 2023 (p2p-basel.org) - including #EarthStar, #Cabal, #P2Panda and of course #Manyverse. Jan 27-30th at the University of Basel (#unibas).

Does anyone here use #SecureScuttlebutt apps for building a community? I have #Manyverse installed — I love the concept, the execution, and the idea of the *distributed* tech behind it (public key signed posts that you get directly from their app, or from a follower who’s stored them; no ‘server’) but … it’s a ghost town for me, cos no-one I know uses it!

It’s definitely considerably less polished than mastodon, but I can’t help but fall in love with #distributed over #decentralised.

It's time to build our own Internet scuttlebutt.nz/

Scuttlebutt Protocol Guide ssbc.github.io/scuttlebutt-pro

Scuttlebut & the fediverse both have many clients (software apps). However, Scuttlebut is a social network built on the peer-to-peer SSB protocol.

The Manyverse (For Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux) looks similar to . manyver.se/

Manyverse is a social networking app with features you would expect: posts, likes, profiles, private messages, etc. But it's not running in the cloud owned by a company, instead, your friends' posts and all your social data live entirely in your phone (or computer). This way, even when you're offline, you can scroll, read anything, and even write posts and like content! When your phone (or computer) is back online, it syncs the latest updates directly with your friends' phones, through a shared local Wi-Fi or on the internet.

Manyverse already works, but it is still in beta. Download it and give it a try manyver.se/

and use centralized computing systems; therefore, the control and management of the systems lies entirely in the hands of one provider, who must be trusted to treat the data and communication traces securely.

The that incorporates et al. is a semi-centralized computer system where the control and management of the systems lies entirely in the hands of instance administrators.

As a zero-trust alternative, peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies promise to support end-to-end communication, uncompromising access control, anonymity and resilience against censorship and massive data leaks through misused trust.

Online folk lies & BS in general.

Some, not so smart folk, lie on social media (who knew) as they do offline. Even too themselves

Without going into detail why they do this, here is an effective psychological heuristic to mitigate online folk BS (context ). Give all online folk the benefit of our doubts. Take them at their word (face value). If their words are scientifically BS, so be it.

If their "wit" is actually unethical grandstanding, so be it.

What is race?, not - what is race?

Some folk would call me "white" (presently, my skin tone is more of a lighter shade of brown as it's been summer in the UK)

However, my ancestors that lived in Africa had a natural darker skin tone than me (e.g., a more darker shade of brown). But, my ancestors then migrated north.

If it wasn't for racists, & if l had the choice, l'd choose to be "black" (a darker skin tone protects my skin better from solar radiation).

What is race?

Whilst folk argue & greenwash about climate change, or simply try to ignore the subject all together, they have missed the entire point of the debate.

There is a general solution! that sustains the important aspects of a modern way of life

It's enough to make someone think that many people prefer climate virtue signalling on social media. Talking the talk, though are not quite as enthusiastic when it comes to walking the walk.

I feel like my feed is everyone arguing that "climate change isn't a personal responsibility, look at these rich assholes and capitalist structures!!!"

My friends, it is both.

Yeah, the rich are causing the most damage, but the so-called western lifestyle of cheap consumer goods, foreign produce, high meat consumption, jetsetting, and a whole lot of other things are absolutely unsustainable as it is much less if that level of luxury was extended to the other 7 billion people on the planet.

You (yes you, personally, the individual) have to cut back, and you have to convince your friends to do the same.

If we applied this to something like basic ass white feminism, it would be like saying "why should I stop being a womanizer when there's period poverty and the glass ceiling?" You have to do the right thing for yourself and others as you simultaneously try to undo the macro or structural injustices.

You might have heard that the company that owns Instant Pot has filed for bankruptcy. The makers of Instant Pot did something horribly wrong: they made a really good product that works very well and does not need to be replaced frequently. This means that owners of Instant Pots might only need to buy one and rarely replace it, if at all.

This is a great success from the perspective of *industry,* in Veblen’s sense, but terrible for *business.* The makers of Instant Pot failed to sufficiently sabotage their product by, say, building in intentional obsolescence. Maybe they should have used cheaper parts that wear out faster, or installed software that requires regular updates, or deliberately inserted components designed to make it fail.

But they didn’t, and so sales were stagnant. The firm that owns Instant Pot borrowed lots of money in an attempt to make a new version of Instant Pot they somehow hoped to sell to consumers of Instant Pot. It was too much; the firm did not earn enough differential profits—profits at a faster rate than its competitors—and so the firm is failing, despite the success of the product.

There was a stretch when Elon Musk took over twitter and started charging for blue checks (lmao) and some of his sycophants started talking about “Veblen goods.”

A Veblen good is something for which demand *increases* as price increases, in contact to the neoclassical orthodoxy that demand decreases axiomatically with price.

Veblen goods are things that rich people buy to signal their wealth and status. Jewelry, fancy watches, yachts, Ivy League degrees. Things that cost many thousands or millions of dollars.

The idea that an $8 verification on twitter would ever be a status symbol for the rich was fucking ludicrous.
