"Today, The Appeal published Locked In, Priced Out, a project that includes a first-of-its-kind database of prison commissary lists from 46 states. This project also examines the availability, prices, and markups of products across several categories, including food, hygiene, and religious items."

If your enemy is literally hiding behind children, you don't say, "My enemy made me kill children." You say, "I couldn't kill my enemy, because there were children in the way."

Unless, of course, you don't think the children are really human in the way that your children are human.

WIRED sent a reporter to a "constitutional sheriffs" convention.

One speaker said he'd formed a "posse" of about 150 "deputized citizens" to protect voting polls from "immigrants" and then passed out literature for other sheriffs to teach them how to form their own.

Not even 24 hrs after making history as the first company to mass fire workers for pro-Palestine protests, by summarily firing 28 people, Google announced that the “(ir)responsible AI org,” the one they created in response to firing me, is now reporting up the Israeli office, through an SVP there.

Seems like they want us to know how forcefully and clearly they are backing this genocide.

This is terrifying. These “Constitutional sheriffs” are fascistic petty tyrants who believe they’re accountable to nobody. And their wingnut “posses,” hopped up on conspiracy theories, are gonna harass and intimidate voters. Or worse.

ICMYI: The incidents under review mostly took place in the West Bank and occurred before Oct. 7. They include reports of extrajudicial killings by Israeli Border Police; an incident in which a battalion gagged, handcuffed and left an elderly Palestinian American man for dead; and an allegation that interrogators tortured and raped a teen who had been accused of throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails.

The Splenda arrangement, the lawsuit argues, was simply “a scheme to defraud the American people by approving and endorsing recipes submitted by Splenda … when the ADA knew that those recipes were contrary to … well-established and emerging scientific principles”

I'd just like to call special attention to the massive voter suppression that targets Arizona's Native population. The Native vote delivered Arizona for Biden in 2020, so the GOP doubled down on voter suppression targeting Native Americans. It's just like Stacey Abrams and Fair Fight in Georgia, except it doesn't seem to get as much attention. I think a lot of reporters understand urban voter suppression better than reservation injustices.

There are thousands of rock glaciers in the western US, but how old they are has always been unclear. Colleagues and I just published an #openaccess paper showing that rock glaciers may be much older than we thought, maybe 10,000 years or more. Furthermore, even though they move slowly, their longevity means they play an important role in the evolution of mountain #landscapes. #geology #utah #periglacial #geomorphology #remotesensing

Florida’s Ron DeSantis has signed a law blocking local governments from enacting heat protections for outdoor workers—including the farmworkers that feed him and his family.

“Two million people in Florida, from construction to agriculture, work outside in often humid, blazing heat.”

If this country was truly “pro-life,” we would have Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, gun reform, universal child care, and a living wage.

The right-wing agenda isn’t about “life.”

It’s about control.

@protecttruth Sinclair broadcasting is laughing its fascist asses off at everyone who's first reaction is to blame fox news.

Think of the way angry white reactionaries who storm school board meetings are described as “concerned parents” – but Black parents are special interest groups and progressive educators are “activists.” 7/

"The facts involving Trump are crystal clear, and as news people, we cannot pretend otherwise, as unpopular as that might be with a segment of our readers. There aren’t two sides to facts. People who say the earth is flat don’t get space on our platforms. If that offends them, so be it."

Look at the path Curiosity has taken crawling up the slopes of Mount Sharp on Mars. It has finally reached a fascinating region called Gediz Vallis, which looks like a debris channel filled with boulders and debris. But what formed the channel? Scientists think that a flood of water might have carved the channel relatively quickly, billions of years ago, and then it was filled by debris sliding down from the side of the mountain. Curiosity has its work cut out for it.
