Looking through old projects to gain some initiative to work on new projects. I made this box for my brother-in-law from some cedar for the sides, and padauk for the top. Box joint was cut using a jig on my table saw. #woodworking

I just saw something that frankly pisses me off...

It was someone saying that just because you are having a bad day, buck up buttercup, other people have it worse

Fuck that, you're allowed to have a bad day and you're allowed to shout it from the rooftops, yes, are there people struggling other than you, absolutely, could life be worse, absolutely

That doesn't make you any less deserving of help and love, and that mentality isn't going to help you

Ask for help if you need it

Just to be clear, when the New York Times reported that the FBI saw “no link between Trump and Russia” — a week before the 2016 election — the FBI agent who was just arrested over ties to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska was heading up the investigation.

Random science fact: did you know wax worms can digest plastic? They produce an enzyme that can degrade polyethylene within hours at room temperature. So, umm, anyone want to raise worms?

This is Jorah, one of my daughter's 5 cats. He is having a great time showing off the scarf I knitted for my daughter.

When I was about ten, I noticed an infrared light in our VCR and became convinced that it was a hidden camera that my parents were using to spy on me.

I wasn’t a bad kid so I wasn’t worried, but I convinced myself that if I sang and danced for the camera, my parents would FINALLY see my talent and help me get on Star Search.

For the next month, I did super weird performances in front of that VCR until I finally acknowledged that they hadn’t provided any feedback on my skillz, at which point I concluded that the only logical conclusion was that the camera wasn’t working, so I…

DISMANTLED THE VCR to examine the camera.

Once everything was opened up and pulled apart, I realized I had no idea what I was looking at so I just screwed everything back together with a bunch of loose, rattling parts inside.

About a week later, I remember watching my dad trying to play a Beverly Hills Cop VHS tape to no avail and silently thinking “this is YOUR fault for not seeing my full POTENTIAL, daaaaad!”

I used to be a cheerleader for switching to the numworks graphing #calculators but I couldn’t get my huge math department on board with that decision. 😒🙄

The TI 84 CE now has a python app— and I guess that’s good enough. Only there are some things I question about the implementation. For example in python to use the math library (sine, cosine, square root etc.) you need to start the program with “from math import *” this feels … silly. It’s a calculator. Why not have #mathematics by default?

Today was shop equipment upgrade day. I've been using an old box lid with a hole cut in the middle as a downdraft table substitute. Keeps the dust mostly contained while I sand, but not great.

Built myself a pegboard version with a fitted hole in the side to accommodate the vacuum hose - it's not perfect, but it's definitely a step up! Tried it out today, and it did indeed catch most of the dust I produced while sanding! Don't have room for a REAL downdraft table...

Did you know that you can make croissant dough and bake it into loaf form? I have just discovered this sorcery, and now I want nothing else to eat ever. Send help.

A pic from my lecture last Friday on "Radioactive fallout and dirty bombs"

In this slide, talking about early concepts of radiological warfare, and how the Allied invasion forces had Geiger counters in anticipation of the Nazis "salting" the beaches with uranium particles to sicken and repel the invasion.

This demonstrates that governments were aware of the risk to human health from particles, and that when they later came down as "fall-out" it was not unanticipated.

Also, here in Japan, still wearing a mask during public lectures.

My daughter is a trans woman.

Here is a comprehensive list of people and institutions she's harming by identifying as a different gender than she did as a child:

A short thread on Emmy Noether and giving credit.

Felix Klein gave a lecture at the Mathematical Society of Göttingen #OTD in 1918. The title was “On Hilbert’s first note on the foundations of physics."

Klein included excerpts from letters in which he and Hilbert give priority to Emmy Noether for her results on conservation of energy in general relativity.

History in pics: Testing prototype Roomba's in 1982. It would take two decades until they could be made small enough to clean under a couch.
