CAVEAT

The company I work for is hiring. Backend (Scala stuff, jvm stuff) and front end (React, Flow that we’re transitioning to TS). The webby job would report to me. (I know. It is to laugh. I know nothing of modern webdev.)

Both codebases are old and cranky. The company culture is like nothing I have encountered before, in both good and bad ways. The engineering processes are pretty immature despite the oldness and successful-ness of the codebases. It progresses through the sheer brains of its founding team, though IMO they're at their limit.

The company is doing something pretty useful and cool that is worth doing. It is deffo not another stupid startup. The founding team has run companies before, which is good.

I cannot talk anybody out of two coding exercises in the interview.

I could use another ally or two on the side of lawful good for this particular gig, but it won't be easy.

If I have not scared you off:

Rest easy, Lynn. What an amazing woman.

The legacy of Lynn Conway, chip design pioneer and transgender-rights advocate

news.engin.umich.edu/2024/06/t

From the article:
"Lynn Conway, who quietly revolutionized microchip design and boldly blazed a trail for transgender individuals, died on June 9. She was 86 years old.

“Why not question everything?” was one of her guiding philosophies, the professor emerita of electrical engineering and computer science told The Michigan Engineer magazine in 2014.

Conway has been called the hidden hand in the 1970s chip design movement that made today’s consumer electronics and personal computing devices possible."

“What would be informative: A minute or two of unedited video showing Trump’s rambling, incoherent and deranged rants. Rather than merely “fact check” the nonsense blizzard, reports can explore the unprecedented nature of his rhetoric, illustrate the deterioration in his thinking and speech, and discuss how an obviously irrational and unhinged leader casts a spell over his devoted following.” How to report on the election #JenniferRubinwapo.st/45d5wpk

Unemployment has been at or below (mostly below) 4% since the end of 2021.

4 years ago, Trump called it "joyous" &"stupendous" that unemployment was only 13.3%.

In the "booming" Reagan years, unemployment averaged 7.5%.

Politics aren't popular, but they're essential to ensuring that we can keep the auto industry pointing in the right direction, continue to drop our emissions, and make the planet safer and more equitable for everyone.

The problem? Oil wants in on the action. And it has DEEP pockets that some candidates are more than willing to exploit.

Approaching the end of a dog’s life is always incredibly sad, but also reminds you to treasure every moment you’ve got with them.

Every unrushed walk, every extended sniff, every roll on the grass, every greeting, every nose out the car window, every soft woof, every affectionate nuzzle, every little kiss, every wet shake, every excited stumble, every opportunity to give a helping hand up, every hand-fed blob of food…everything.

It’s never enough time. Ever.
