I represented in a Sankey diagram the most activated emotions in 2022 year on a group of 50 psychotherapy patients, as they recorded them in real time in their different life contexts.

The most activated emotion during 2022 was “surprise”.

I mean here “emotions” as an integral way of living being to feel in relation to oneself, to others and to the world.

The very word ‘emotion’ comes from the latin “ex-movere”, to move from. Moving means orienting oneself in the world, taking on a perspective on the world. In relation to the perspective we assume, we see some aspects, some profiles of the world, we perceive some relevance, while others remain hidden.

We are surprised by emotions when the profiles of the world that emotions actualize, allowing us to encounter unexpected aspects of ourselves, of the world, and displace us. The profiles of the world that emerge in situations disturb us, question us, place us in a more or less known condition, confirm or not confirm the consolidated image that we have settled about ourselves, the world and the others, inviting us to find a new position, generate new life.
