Just read this sentence in a WaPo article on salad ingredients, and now I'm intrigued. Not a fan of American cheese at all, but I thought it was still a cheese?!
"Just don’t use American cheese, which is not actually cheese."

I would love to see a reference on the rules for labelling cheese - it seems the further your product is from actual cheese, the more adjectives you are required to include.

I once saw a material for sale in a grocery store, which the package asserted was "imitation cold-pack cheese-food-like product."

I have no idea what it was.
