I want to hear people's thoughts:

We have an 18 year old Subaru Outback that we bought in 2010. In the last 12.5 years, we've driven 80000km, which has caused approx 17.6 tCO2 (about 200gCO2/km).

Is it worth aiming to replace this car with an EV? My understanding, from reading Volvo's report about embodied carbon in their new cars (volvocars.com/images/v/-/media, p25) is that the manufacture of a new petrol car produces 15.7 tCO2, and a new EV produces 26.4 tCO2.

Based on these numbers, I estimate it would take approx 17.5 years for us to repay the embodied carbon if we bought a new electric car, compared with keeping our existing car.

@wall0159 There are more factors. What part of the Subaru is recyclable? How about the new EV? What energy sources will charge your EV?
