Just 16 years ago, 49 Senators and 236 House members voted to pass *an amendment to the US Constitution* backed by President George Bush to prohibit same-sex marriage. Since then support for marriage equality has skyrocketed.

Yesterday in my BIO/INFO 270 class I lectured about predatory publishing. Whether or not you think Hindawi falls into that category, they need to be doing a much better job of vetting the articles they publish.

Via Josemari Feliciano over at twitter, one of the worst examples of a #DatavizFail #GraphCrime that I've ever seen from this paper:

Look closely: These are not error bars. They are literally the typeset letter "T" placed atop each bar in the bar graph.

The second half might have been the worst half of football I've ever seen from a winning World Cup team. Congrats Men's US team, I guess? The first half was at least excellent! On to the elimination rounds!

#OnThisDay, 28 Nov 1967, PhD student Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovers the existence of pulsars.

Not included in the 1974 Nobel prize for the discovery, Bell received a £3m prize for her work in 2018. She's using it to set up a foundation to improve diversity in STEM.

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.

PSA: you can thread your toots in such a way that only the first clutters up people's TL.

Subsequent toots - unlisted.

Here's the kicker. It's not that Galactica picked the wrong law. It is that the Padua economist to whom Galactica attributes the law, Gianni Brandolini, DOES NOT EXIST.

Galactica's phrasing of the law itself? That does not exist either. No one has ever said that phrase online (rather a surprise, tbh).

Galactica doesn't let us "access and manipulate what we know about the universe." It generates *pure bullshit* — which, incidentally, will be orders of magnitude more difficult to clean up.
