Or perhaps, just perhaps, the nation’s supposedly leading business newspaper would have better seen these failures coming if they had focused more on market, economic, and business conditions and less on obsessively rooting out the woke menace of women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and veterans(!) gaining token admission to the corridors of power and wealth.

75% of scientists are burned out and pulling back on conferences, peer review, committee membership, etc nature.com/articles/d41586-023

When scientists set boundaries, it not only improves their own personal well-being, but also creates norms that limits are acceptable and healthy

Expect more scrutiny of the 2018 law that reduced regulations on banks with less than $250 billion in assets like Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Bernie Sanders already calling for repeal —> bloomberg.com/news/live-blog/2

In any case, it's fascinating to see #statscop twitter fall so publicly and transparently into the prosecutor's fallacy.

Registration and abstract submissions are now open for the 2023 Mid-South Glycoscience Meeting on June 29th in beautiful Oxford, MS. We have a great slate of invited speakers this year. Abstract submissions for both posters and oral presentations are open. Presentations and posters from trainees are welcome; this is a great venue for trainees to talk about their research. We hope to see you this summer!

For any who are interested, I'm starting a Mass Spec Coding Club!

I set up a Discord server for meetings and discussions and a GitHub page to post content and resources. Details here: github.com/michaelmarty/MassSp

First meeting date to come...

@pwilmart @pastelbio I would argue that this also applies to grant writing... and would love to see open submissions (i.e. whenever you are ready). Data shows that dropping submission deadlines leads to less submissions.

As if people felt compelled to write and submit project when a call opens.

Happy International Women’s Day! 💐

Ways to celebrate:
• Share salaries and negotiation strategies
• Ask women to give talks that are not about being a woman in tech
• Invite women into rooms where decisions are made and intro them to senior people in your company and field
• Spend time leveling up women technically through code reviews
• Offer equal maternity and paternity leave timelines and talk about this in interviews
• Create teams and companies with an affordance for flexible work

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are essential components of the extracellular matrix, key players in countless cellular functions in health and disease. Yet, the biological roles of GAGs are too often still a mystery, due to their inherent disorder and variable sulfation patterns.

In this review out now in JACS Au ⬇️ we discuss the methods for GAGs discovery available today and present perspectives for future developments with very exciting prospects 1/2 🧵

Why am I just finding out now that The 1975 put out a new album?

I guess I know what I'm doing tonight.

This is really interesting. I've been messing with Chat-GPT, asking it somewhat detailed scientific questions. It pretty much always makes errors. However, it will accept corrections after verifying they are true and, if you give it the same prompt, will remake the response without making the same mistake (generally making other mistakes instead).

But, it will forget the corrections as soon as the conversation ends.

Jimmy Carter's most important legacy is probably his least well known. Before Carter, 3.6 million people per year were infected by Guinea Worm, a neglected tropical disease. Today, that's down to *13* cases per year, a reduction of 99.99%. And it throws his post-presidency into stark relief from Trump's who is golfing and ranting on social media while trying to get richer. brianklaas.substack.com/p/jimm

The problem isn't regulating "AI" or future "AGI". It's protecting individuals from corporate and government overreach using "AI" to cut costs and or deflect accountability.

Rupert Murdoch gave Trump son-in-law/aide Jared Kushner access to "Fox confidential information about Biden's ads," apparently showing them to him before they were public.

Bret Stephens once called global warming "mass hysteria" and claimed climate science had been "discredited."

Please don't believe a single word he writes about #COVID-19.
