people generally don't consume enough iodine even though iodized salt is obviously available in every supermarket for cheap, and $1 buys you a lifetime of iodine solution at pretty much any pharmacy
Darwin would have approved that, but the deficiency actually results in idiots being born instead of sterility (or equivalently quick death)
