Hi, I'm Jeff! I'm a nerd living in New Hampshire with anxiety and depression. (The anxiety is why this introduction is more than a year late.)

My interests are all over the place, but I mostly talk about #Linux, #programming, and #privacy these days. Also #knitting and #crochet, when I'm channeling my inner grandmother.

Occasional random thoughts are free or your money back.

@jcnotwit What do you think of the Free State Project?

@L29Ah Their goal is to establish a society founded on the hierarchical control of resources and labor. Property owners would sit at the top of this and be accountable to no one. I think this is bad, and we shouldn't have rulers of any sort.

For a longer, thorough analysis of this sort of thing, "An Anarchist FAQ" is a good place to begin. For a discussion of the ways human societies have organized without hierarchy, the book "The Dawn of Everything" is quite excellent.

@jcnotwit I thought they're focused on libertarianism, and under libertarianism one is free to participate in any structure you want or create your own, no?

@L29Ah That's the line libertarians toe, sure. It's never been true, though.

The FAQ I linked has a well-sourced history of the movement, its founders, and their reasons for cultivating a thin veneer of anarchist language. Their endgame is basically feudalism, but without a king to bother the oligarchs.

Liberty requires the abolishment of hierarchy, not just the freedom to choose between masters.
