I just looked on Twitter and my account is still verified. Now I'm worried people will think I'm dumb enough to have paid Elon money...
Lots of people replying to this with "Why don't you delete your account?" So here's why I haven't (yet) deleted my Twitter account: If I delete it, the username will release, and someone else will be able to register it. I don't want that to happen, and so I'm sitting on the account, using it only to send out automated links to my new essays and podcasts*, until Twitter's so far gone I don't care about releasing it.
*And I'll likely stop this soon, anyway, because engagement is basically zero.
@arossp If you had jumped ship early enough, there were API tools that allowed you to delete all content on your account without deleting the account itself.
My old Twitter account is just an empty shell taking up some server space and directing folks to my Mastodon account.
I refuse to contribute content to that jackass's empire.
@arossp Right, but wouldn't that effectively be enabling your friends' continued use of the service? Providing a value to the service by helping keep some users locked-in to what they're familiar with?
@LouisIngenthron I did delete all my prior tweets and I'm following zero people. The only thing in my profile is a running list of links away from Twitter and to my work elsewhere, so the content I'm providing the platform is of minimal or zero value, while at least keeping the many friends I have who are still using it informed of my ongoing work.
