In about 40 minutes, we'll find out the astronaut assignments for Artemis II. Artemis II will be the first mission to send astronauts to the moon since the Apollo program. They won't land on the moon -- that's scheduled for Artemis III. This will be my #Artemis thread!
This is a graphic from NASA on the Artemis II mission that's super helpful. I realize this does not have alt text and will try to go back and add later, but the event is starting soon!
Artemis II will send astronauts about 6,400 miles past the far side of the moon and then will use a free-return trajectory to come back to Earth.
@skrishna Why are they jumping from sub-orbital fly-by in A2 to a full landing in A3? Wouldn't achieving orbit around the moon be an important intermediate step (like it was before)?
