I recently had an invited editorial accepted for publication and am going through the steps of the publishing agreement. I want to share this because every single academic paper you look at has this type of process. Look at the "open access" publishing fees. To make this accessible to everyone, my fucking OPINION about a study that was recently published, I'd have to pay around $3000. It's not even original research on my part. Of course I checked the "Publish Subscription" option. This is why so much research is pay-walled if it's not funded by an NIH grant (recent legislation makes it so any publicly funded research has to be open access).

@tayfonay Wow. Do they prevent you, legally, from releasing it yourself open-access?

@LouisIngenthron Yes. I can share it with individuals but putting out on a website or the like is a big no no

@tayfonay Yeah, that's messed up then. I could understand the fee as a "hosting cost" for open access if they allowed you to openly publish elsewhere, but since they don't, it's just straight-up extortion.
