How do I get high resolution displays and desktop environments to work together without having everything so tiny?

In Cinnamon you must set "user interface scaling" correctly. Other desktop environments may differ.

@khird Yeah. I have been discovering that more and more. I got KDE Plasma to do it well. But Gnome's settings for it really stink. 100% or 200% is a big difference.

Hm I haven't used GNOME since v3 came out basically unusable. But searching around I see this is used to zoom partway back out after setting the scaling to 200%:
xrandr --output eDP1 --scale 1.25x1.25
