Whether or not you count the same days, observe the same holidays, or recognize the same cycles of time as your ancestors – the systems they developed, and even our current systems, will outlast the cultural memory. Every day is likely New Years Day in some culture, somewhere on this Earth, even if no one living remembers. And that’s a reason to celebrate every day.

Since it's that time of year, here's my entirely unsolicited opinion (again):

All fireworks are terrible and the light and noise aren't worth the sleep disruption, pet trauma, stress for those with mental health challenges, air pollution, hearing damage / physical injuries.

Consider finding a less unpleasant way to celebrate.

Something to look forward to in the coming years is the availability of new radio telescope arrays to be backdrops in sci-fi movies.
One is ngVLA, the planned successor to New Mexico's famous JVLA. ngVLA will have 244 18m antennas, vs 28 25m antennas for JVLA.

In my house, my husband does most of the cooking. This wants to know “who-cooks-for-you?”

Yesterday HAARP lit up a passing asteroid with radio waves during a test. It's great to see one of the OG science facilities that caused conspiracy theorists so much consternation over the years still going strong.

Mt Rainier, Washington

Looking like a scene out of "The Sound of Music", Mt Rainier ("Tahoma", meaning "Mother of Waters" in the language of the Puyallup Tribe) rises above an Alpine meadow near the Sunrise Lodge. You can see the Emmons glacier (source of the White River) and the moraine valley it created.

Seasons greetings to all the super-cool people out there. May you receive whatever it is you need.

Remembering that Jesus, Mary and Joseph were migrants in search of refuge is always a great contribution.

Let's remember tonight all those strangers who are not sleeping at home; who are walking through deserts in search of a better life; those who have suffered violence; those who are in hospitals or prisons; those who have disappeared.

This is by no means a new observation, but the modern world is far too noisy and I really wish we could get a handle on that. A good place to start is simply some basic awareness that not everything has to be done at an earsplitting volume. Then again it feels like society has lost most of its appreciation for silence.
