Ideaspace has a really well-written and compelling article on E-Verify and why it is so problematic. Still lots of mistakes and it's not achieving its mission of ending illegal immigration. Better to focus on creating a guest worker program. https://bit.ly/3hh6sE5
Hi Mastodon friends. Still trying to get the hang of this, but wanted to share Civil Discourse (my newsletter on Substack) from tonight, which is timely for our migration from Twitter & for the midterms. https://joycevance.substack.com/p/too-sensitive?sd=pf
@Anoa depends on what you’d like to do— but if you want to try to learn to code and have a ton of growth potential with that same language, Python is the way to go! There’s a good reason it’s what most people recommend to start with. My advice is to do a little every day rather than try to do too much and burn yourself out on a new way of thinking (if you haven’t coded before).
#Mastodon will need our help to run smoothly as more people migrate here (and we want them to). Consider donating it you can:
@kwcollins I almost exclusively read my “for you” timeline of people I have chosen to follow across dozens of instances, which both limits my timeline to posts and interactions of people I choose, and also limits engagement with other people and topics to that might be tangential. If it’s less addictive because it’s more in my control that sounds great but may cause me to stop using it out of boredom. I’m curious how I’ll use or not use this 6 months from now.
@GiffordJames have a good (and chafe-less) run!
@nosherwan @mgabriel I just open a tab to NYT (if you have a subscription) or 538’s live blog, but I find 538 a bit cumbersome to be honest.
@GiffordJames cold or not, they’ll teach you to wear the right fabric and/or cover them with tape. All it took for me to learn that lesson was one half marathon race.
@DataDrivenMD doesn’t seem to work!
@ezralevin @KevinMKruse @popehat @adamdavidson @Emilynussbaum @juddlegum @drvolts @anneapplebaum @MattGertz
@WalterShaub is tooting a lot of migrators. Check out his feed.
My #introduction — I am a #cancerresearch er and #epidemiologist living in the #usa and remaining mostly anonymous because I’m not famous, I don’t plan to be, and my #progressivepolitics is maybe not always something my employer would want being broadcast :)
@msilpala it does remind me of the late 90s- early 2000s when message boards, chat rooms, and BBS were all trying to figure out what to do with the massive influx of users
@msilpala The iOS app doesn't seem to let you do that, or at least not easily-- but on the website it's quite easy. Oh well, maybe if this catches on it'll improve!
