Global field observations of tree die-off reveal hotter-drought fingerprint for Earth’s #forests.
Earth’s forests face grave challenges in the #Anthropocene, including hotter droughts increasingly associated with widespread forest die-off events.
Frequency of the observed mortality-year climate conditions strongly increases nonlinearly under projected warming.
Forests are dying due to #climate change.

A detailed study of the Kepler-138 #planetary system using 13 #Hubble and #Spitzer transit observations of the warm-temperate planet Kepler-138 d combined with new Keck/HIRES RV measurements of its host #star.
Evidence for a volatile-rich "water world" nature of Kepler-138 d, with a large fraction of its mass contained in a thick volatile layer.
We had a little snow today and there was some activity. It is so slow this winter, it makes me a bit sad. I am yearning for some frost 😌 Anyways, loved the very adventurously colored House Finch, the adorable Titmouse and the King. Much to my dismay, the squirrels have found the branch cam and will not even be deterred by cayenne.

I photographed star trails at a dutch barn...it's a pretty cool thing to stand in a field of cereal all night looking at the night sky...

Astronomers discover South Pole Wall, a gigantic structure stretching 1.4 billion light-years across
Check out this paper by Adam Mann for LiveScience, on this recent discovery in the field of cosmography, which is "the cartography of the cosmos": https://www.livescience.com/south-pole-wall-discovered-in-space.html

#introduction - Greetings everyone! I'm P/D at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, was previously 30 years at Columbia/Lamont working in paleoclimate, now encouraging smart people to do amazing things for ocean/climate solutions. I miss the community we had on T. Let's try to rebuild that here! Some people I've found:

This very wide-field (100º x 100º) star trail is a composition from 2 consecutive nights (one at the bottom and one at the top) from the Haute-Provence observatory. The ISS is passing in the field during the first night. For that, I started the second sequence exactly 23 hour and 56 minutes (one sideral day) after the first one. it was for the fun.
It’s raining after such a prolonged hard frost, so the garden is back on show and reminding me of all things I need to do! 😬 I’m glad before the cold temperatures came I got these beauties in for overwintering. Osteospermum are a favourite of mine and this variety, serenity bronze, is a stunner. Posting this one from June to brighten up what is now a dull and dreary day. #Flowers #Nature #NaturePhotography #Photography #ArtAdventCalendar #day18 #Flower #Gardening #Garden
NASA is sending the first spacecraft to fly near #Jupiter's moon #Io Thursday, kicking off the first of several flights in a mission to study the most volcanic place in the solar system.
#Juno spacecraft, which has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016, will maneuver nine flybys of Io to observe a network of #volcanoes and study Jupiter’s magnetosphere, the first close encounters in over two decades. https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/12/15/nasa-spacecraft-juno-volcanic-jupiter-moon-io/10901528002/

Émilie du Châtelet, who hypothesized conservation of energy, established kinetic energy as distinct from momentum and proportional to (speed)², and combined work by Newton and Leibniz with her own original ideas in "Institutions de Physique," was born #OTD in 1706.
Du Châtelet is an important figure in the development of classical physics, but she is not nearly as well known as many of her male contemporaries.

@MsHouseMD Thank you! These ancient traditions are absolutely fascinating to me.
A friend recently brought to my attention that Merriam-Webster defines "yule" only as synonymous with Christmas. Further down the page the etymology and history are briefly given but I'd think the definition could be expanded!
“The Other Side Of Christmas: Pagan Winter Solstice Festivals”
“December 25th might signify the birth of Jesus for Christians, but the Winter Solstice is also central to other traditions.”
