It's been months since I wrote something for Strong Language (the sweary blog about swearing). Finally researching a new post, on the phrase "swear like a trooper" – or a sailor, trucker, etc. There are so many variants, and more in other languages. But it's a fun one to dig into.

If you speak a #language other than English, and it has an expression equivalent to "swear like a ____", referring to a specific occupation like sailor, cart driver, etc., let me know! I've gathered a few examples, but the more data I get, the better. #linguistics #languages #swearing #profanity #research

Thank you all for the amazing response to this #language query. The replies are so helpful and interesting.

Work duties mean I have to put it on hold till later, but I'll be reading all the replies carefully when I get the chance. #languages #linguistics #translation

Thanks to Mastodon, I now have "swear like a [X]" phrases from about 20 #languages, some with multiple versions. I'd love to hear examples from non-Indo-European languages, if anyone knows them.

I'll try to write it up here over the weekend: stronglang.wordpress.com/ #swearing #translation #idiom #CorpusLinguistics #KindOf

I know #blogging is unfashionable. I still love it. It took me months to find the time and motivation to write something new for Strong Language (the sweary blog about swearing).

With your help, finally, I wrote a looonnng-ass post about a four-word expression. Luckily, many of them are lists of fun words

@stancarey "Strong Language" is awesome! Thanks for the update! And for making the time to write a new post.

Blogging is more time-consuming than many readers realize. It can be very hard to keep up, especially if the blogger works a full-time job. I love blogging but finding time and building a following are a lot of work.

@Neekerbreeker Oh, thank you! Strong Language has slowed down, but there's loads of great stuff in the archives from our bunch of writers. And that's very true about blogging – especially if you have to do research and are concerned to get it right. It takes a lot of energy
