Elon's takeover of Twitter was heralded by his fans as a renaissance for free speech. But the reality of Musk’s content moderation revamp has been defined by the billionaire exercising his own petty grievances. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/twitter-suspends-account-tracking-elon-musk-private-jet-1234647211/

we need to be much more strategic about this
everyone seems confident that they know what will happen, but this confidence is misplaced
since there are multiple possible scenarios, and the optimal response is different for each scenario, some formal scenario planning would be useful here
1) many smart people think it's obvious that the site will soon be offline due to technical failure, or offline due to bankruptcy, or both
if this scenario occurs, then abandoning ship and finding a new home right now is probably the best response both individually and collectively
2) other smart people think it's obvious that the site will stay up, but it will be dominated by #fascist disinfo, indoctrination, recruiting and organization
if this scenario occurs, then leaving now is best for my individual satisfaction and mental health, but allowing fascists to build strength uncontested is not the optimal response for everyone collectively
3) another scenario is that 10% of the 450 million active users pay for a blue check, the site survives financially and technically, and 90% of celebrities, journalists, politicians and normie users stay
if this scenario occurs while the remaining 10% of us have exiled ourselves, all those normies will incubate in the right-wing game mechanics of the new twitter, a supermassive media engine of right-wing indoctrination
so we really should think this through, not just what happens now, but what happens next

Hello Mastodon! I'm Brian Klaas - an associate professor of global politics at University College London, a writer for The Atlantic, and host of the Power Corrupts podcast.
I'm Minnesotan.
I write a newsletter on Substack called "The Garden of Forking Paths."
I also wrote the first book on Trump's authoritarianism. My most recent book is "Corruptible: Who Gets Power and How It Changes Us."
And yes, that is a lemur on my shoulder. #Politics #Introduction #WelcomeToMastodon #Mastodon
Oh my.
@Mediaite conservative writer Isaac Schorr misread the Twitter account @joinmastodon as "John Mastodon," and said that the open source social media software was named after this imaginary person. https://www.mediaite.com/opinion/hypocrisy-and-fear-all-the-way-down-at-twitter/
I spoke to a retired educator about the importance of teaching kids accurate US history. They lamented, "A student told me our military has raped & pillaged people in poor countries. I was horrified he said such misinformation. I sat him down & corrected him."
Y'all—& I say this as the brother of a US Marine—our standard must be justice. Acknowledging that members of the US military committed such atrocity isn't anti-American—but what true Patriotism looks like. Let's demand justice above all.
I'm reposting this b/c as a Mastodon newb, I didn't realize the initial post wasn't public ...
As a Twitter asylum seeker whose work focuses on community broadband, I'm new to Mastodon.
Feeling my way around, learning how to use the platform, and looking to connect with folks who care about digital equity, #Internet infrastructure & policy, #movies, #books #chess (and #NBA happenings) - not necessarily in that order
*Sheepish request* I'm new to Mastodon, but a lot of my former Twitter followers don't know I'm here yet. Someone suggested I could simply ask you fine people to boost me. Would you be so kind? (I promise to post a photo of my dog to say thanks). #WelcomeToMastodon
Report back from Twitter filter fuzzing.
What Twitter is blocking
Twitter is filtering links to known Mastodon instances, but still allows direct links to joinmastodon.org.
Twitter also allows linking to shortened URLs of mastodon profiles, but only once. Posting the shortened URL a second time doesn't work, implying there's some backend queue service that's checking the Location
header of links and flagging the ones redirecting to Mastodon instances.
How to evade the filters
Email address spam evasion techniques work. Replacing '.
' with '.
' or [.]
or [dot]
all work.
URI encoding the hostname. Replace at least one of the characters in the hostname with the URI encoded version (ex: https://infosec.exchange
-> https://infosec%2Eexchange
). Browsers are smart enough to URI decode anything you copy/paste into the address bar.data:
URIs. Twitter does not seem to check base64 encoded data:
URIs. It is possible to create a data:text/html;base64,...
base64 encoded HTML URI which can be copied into the address bar and will render as HTML. While Twitter will not render data:
URIs (for obvious reasons), you can still copy/paste them (at your own risk, of course).
Base64. This seems silly, but we could communicate freely on Twitter by simply Base64 encoding our tweets.
Twitter's anti-Mastodon filtering is clown shoes amateur hour.🤡

Bear in mind that, while I may "like" your "toot", about a person, event or particular topic, if it links to the "bird-site" I will no longer boost and inadvertently contribute to their grift. Everyone has a choice and a part to play when crimes go unpunished.
