An update on a favorite topic of mine: The serial tech investment scammer John Clifton Davies, a.k.a. John Bernard, a.k.a. John Cavendish.

Davies/Bernard is a self-proclaimed millionaire investor who has bilked countless tech startups. His real name is John Clifton Davies, a U.K. man who absconded from justice before being convicted on multiple counts of fraud in 2015. He ran a series of businesses that purported to offer assistance to struggling companies, but instead robbed them and put them out of business.

Prior to his conviction, Davies served 16 months in jail before being cleared of murdering his third wife on their honeymoon in India.

After fleeing the UK for Ukraine w/ his 4th wife who is from there, Davis/Bernard started scam companies that would pretend to have tens of millions to invest in tech firms. When companies eager for a press release about someone investing in their vision agree to pay for the investor's due diligence fees -- and the due diligence company is owned by the investors, well, you just got scammed. Most victims can't justify the legal costs given the losses, and low likelihood of recovery, and shame, etc.

Pretty sure I just found his newest invention/identity/scam company. It's called CodesToYou, and it purports to offer "full cycle software development" which strikes "your ultimate balance between speed, cost, and quality."

CodesToYou claims you can hire it to produce software for you using smart Ukrainian coders. But from what I've heard so far these people never deliver.

The Who We Are page of CodesToYou has several interesting profiles. For starters, the woman listed and pictured as the marketing team lead -- "Maria Yakovleva" -- is the exact same profile picture and first name used by the LinkedIn profile here, which used to list her experience as part of the executive team for the Private Office of John Bernard. She had a different name then, though: "Mariya Kulikova."

Also, the person listed as head of business development, David Bruno, is still the only person I've ever spoken with who had nice things to say about Mr. Davies/Bernard.

In 2015, Mr. Bruno's company SafeSwiss Secure Communications AG bought a company -- SecureSwissData - from Davies/Bernard in an "undisclosed multimillion buyout."

From a 2020 story: “I can confirm that I know John Bernard and have always found him very honourable and straight forward in my dealings with him as an investor,” Bruno said. “To be honest with you, I struggle to believe that he would, or would even need to be, involved in the activity you mentioned, and quite frankly I’ve never heard about those things.”
