Near as I can tell, Americans who are not Nazis, expect people to go down for all this fascist shit. And not a small number of people. They don't want to hear about "defunding ICE till there are some reforms." They want to see fascists punished for the crimes that have been committed against them, the people. LOTS of fascists.
The Dem party is in very real danger of becoming irrelevant as this plays out if they don't figure this out. Which might be for the best, I have no idea.

If the Democrat party leadership cannot be arsed to campaign on abolishing ICE, then stop playing nice, abolish the Democrat party leadership and replace those nutless quisling cretins with someone who will.
