So often, I'm reminded about the broken state of IT today. Barriers to entry everywhere are ridiculously high.
Self-hosting anything is incredibly stressful, often requiring you to be skilled as a system administrator to the point where you could make a living off of it.
I know why, of course.
Capitalism rewards enclosure. Money flows to companies who want customers on their terms, so solutions are designed to service thousands of people and for professionals to operate.
We need #SmallTech.
If you guessed "My Amazon Fire Tablet" you were CORRECT.
In the last 10 hours, my tablet has made just shy of 32000 DNS requests with over 28600 of them to api.amazon.com.
I'd really like to know what the hell Amazon is doing that it needs to phone home THAT MUCH.

Oh wow, the new #Rust release is exciting! GATs, let-else and even stable Backtrace. This release is packed with goodies
So, since I just moved instances, I think it's time for an #introduction. Hi I'm maxim. I write/wrote a lot about #chatcontrol, starting out on mastodon and ending up putting everything on my blog, you can find all posts here: https://maxim.tips/tags/chatcontrol/ #Chatkontrolle #neuhier
@pluralistic PSA: The IRS actually has a program called VITA where they provide grants and training for volunteer tax preparers to assist folks making under $60k in filing their taxes for free. As long as you meet the income requirements, they can handle some pretty complex tax situations. It's been a few years since I volunteered, but I recall one year when the organizer sent us a summary showing how many millions of dollars of tax refunds we had processed that otherwise would have gone through these predatory companies. It was a good feeling.

Precedents like the German government running a Mastodon server are important beyond the obvious reasons. They reinforce the urgency of serious public funding for open code.
If we treated open code as part of the essential infrastructure of the 21st century and funded it at billions of USD/EUR as opposed to tiny grants here and there, the "fediverse" model of interconnected, self-governing communities would become the norm, not the exception.

Oh crap, #DeviantArt folks, all your art just got opted-in to their AI art gen.
You have to manually opt out. Go to your gallery, click edit on each piece and opt out.
I believe you have to do this per piece? Which seems catastrophically cruel? I'm not on there, so hopefully I'm misunderstanding and there's a global account setting.
(If anyone chimes in with that I'll add it in a reply/edit)
Technology is not a net good, or even a neutral force. Technology is a Force Multiplier. It reshapes the world to fit the vision of those who design it, regulate it, and wield it. Oil companies poison our lakes and rivers, slowly boiling our planet. Facebook tracks everything we do online and uses that data to make us miserable. Disney owns an outsized portion of modern folklore. The FCC decides who gets to launch a radio station, and under what circumstances. Television turns reasonable people in to rabid fans of raving monsters, and turns raving monsters in to celebrities, politicians and thought leaders.
It does not have to be this way.

Whoa. Mastodon (qoto) has circles now? I loved Google Plus, and know those are now in Twitter, too. Are they basically persistent chatrooms? #noxp

What are the scalability limits of Postgres in various configurations? I.e. global record count, table record limits, number of tables, transactions per second, records per year, read scalability limits with and without read replicas, etc?
So as I’m new again I’d better do an #Introduction
