@sandehalynch I don't use screen readers myself but I tested a few when I worked at Manchester University. They will read out all the text, and add the word "hashtag" whenever they see the symbol. So "I use #Mastodon to #read #interesting #toots" would be read out as I use hashtag mastodon to hashtag read hashtag interesting hashtag toots. You've got plenty of characters to play with here so it's neater and less annoying for screenreader users if you put hashtags at the end or beginning.

Bad actors can exploit this too. If I come up with a hashtag that hasn't been used before, and I pump out content about it across a network of sketchy websites and have a few key figures use the hashtag and share it, that's all it takes to spread disinfo.
