Wow, I just discovered that @wikidata queries can be used to look for Mastodon accounts...! (@egonw@scholar.social https://chem-bla-ics.blogspot.com/2022/11/finding-mastodon-accounts-with-wikidata.html) Here's a list of universities with Mastodon accounts: https://query.wikidata.org/#SELECT%20DISTINCT%20%3Finstitution%20%3FinstitutionLabel%20%3Fmastodon%20WHERE%20%7B%0A%20%20%3Finstitution%20wdt%3AP31%2Fwdt%3AP279%2a%20wd%3AQ31855%20%3B%0A%20%20%20%20wdt%3AP4033%20%3Fmastodon%20.%0A%20%20SERVICE%20wikibase%3Alabel%20%7B%20bd%3AserviceParam%20wikibase%3Alanguage%20%22%5BAUTO_LANGUAGE%5D%2Cen%22.%20%7D%0A%7D%0A

Just post to your Mastodon instance and don't bother with the bird site.
You can put a message over there telling folks where to find your toots. And maybe periodically post a tweet reminding everyone that you're now on Mastodon.
@Pat As for myself, I essentially stopped posting on the other site. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I'm not the social media manager of my university, so I don't get to make this kind of decision at a larger scale. Furthermore, in general, institutions are rather reluctant to make "bold moves" such as this one, that's why I think Musk decision was in fact quite a good strategy for him...
