@futurebird How this one. The other problem with the current QT implementation at qoto is that it doesn't seem possible to reply with a QT. It seems to be an either or situation.

@SETIEric

Yep.

As more and more services implement QT this is what those on Mastodon based servers will see.

It shows up as a link. The link takes me to another server where I'm not logged in.

For newer users this has caused them to keep making additional accounts at multiple servers-- they think they need an account at each server to respond!

The solution is to search for the URL on my home server. But that's borders on hostile design if you ask me.

@futurebird @SETIEric I've been wrestling with this, and have arrived at what seems like a solution in the #steampipe #dashboard I use as a front-end to Mastodon.

@judell @futurebird @SETIEric

I am extremely interested in solutions to this, as it’s one of the biggest issues I have with Mastodon.

But, I am not tech savvy enough to follow your steampipe solution as posted here. Still waiting for some solves that are a bit more low-tech user-friendly…I’m sure they will be developed eventually, as I see complaints about this issue everywhere I go on the Don.

@ProgGrrl @futurebird @SETIEric I expect the dashboards I'm building to appear at cloud.steampipe.io where you'll just need to pop in your (easily-gotten) Mastodon token to use them. It'll be a power-UX for sure, not everyone will prefer a "Bloomberg terminal for Mastodon" (blog.jonudell.net/2022/12/17/a). For those who don't, very different interfaces can be built by reskinning the data engine. I hope some of the tech-savvy among us will try that on behalf of the less-tech-savvy.

@judell well, exactly, this is what I am referring to: I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about here. So I will wait patiently for systems to get built. 😉

@futurebird @486timetable @SETIEric Hostile design for sure. Not nearly as brilliant as they think. Smaller stature people slide in under the rails. Truly, why not make them as comfortable as possible?

@TammyGentzel @futurebird @486timetable @SETIEric
How to make benches that are hostile to long-term sitters is a pretty well-understood discipline at this point, there are lots of patterns for it. So if I see a bench that appears to discourage loiterers/sleepers, but has a loophole like this, I wonder if the loophole's there on purpose.

@486timetable @futurebird @SETIEric Yes. Hostile on purpose. So you cant serial harass people and get into slap fights with quoting and pitting peoples followers against each other

@486timetable

Oh no no no LOL. I at least know better than to take this one on.

Working in and limited an unresponsive corporate space makes people very very very creative.

@Astrid

IDK, Astrid people have been slap fighting and pitting people against me just fine without them. I really don't think that's how it works.

Seriously. I want this place to keep getting more awesome and keep on growing. Don't assume malicious intent or naiveté on the part of those of us with years and years of experience with taming "the bird site" --

I've learned so many things since I came here. But, as always, I have also arrived to teach.

@futurebird @SETIEric This reminds me of Linux in the 90s. The experienced users were like: Just use linux as your desktop OS. And folks would say: I have this sound card and it doesn't work. Then the reply would be something like: Just recompile your kernel with support for it. Like it was as simple as sharpening a pencil or something. To be fair, I was probably guilty of "Just recompile your kernel" as well.

@futurebird @SETIEric
But these are real usability issues. They impact the folks who have been here a long time, but they have simply altered their behavior to minimize the friction. I can tell you that I don't miss having to recompile kernels, and I won't miss having to work around these issues either.

@SETIEric

Well this time it made me a little link preview... that contains none of the post text so... it's just a pretty version of the link. It still goes to the other server.

BTW, can you post how the link I looked at in this post:

sauropods.win/@futurebird/1096

was supposed to look? I want to add a screenshot of how it would look with QT.

@futurebird @SETIEric @futurebird. Sorry for bringing up old news, but this may be of interest. I decided to make an account on a friendica server to check out the interface. It seems to do something close to "the right thing" for quote posts even when just posting links to another post. The interface is a little too facebook for me, so I don't plan to use it that often unless something else changes, but I think I'll import my mastodon follows to this account and use it occasionally. It also supports preview on posts.
